I finally made it! For the first post in the Bucket List section, I'm crossing something off my list: The Salty Dog Cafe. I've been trying to get down to Hilton Head for years but I was only just recently able to make the trip. My first stop was a place I'd been hearing about since middle school, The Salty Dog Cafe. Seeing the t-shirts, I always wondered what kind of food would be there and more importantly, if it would be good. Thankfully, on a day trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina, I was able to stop by and try it for myself and let me tell you I was NOT disappointed.
Jake's Hush Puppies
Handmade sweet cornbread bites.
We waited for about 30 to 45 minutes for a table so we were starving by the time we sat down. To start we order Jakes' hush puppies which are some handmade sweet cornbread bites served with honey butter. They were amazing! I don't eat hush puppies ever. I don't like the taste or overall texture however these weren't exactly hush puppies. These hush puppies tasted just like a funnel cake. They honestly could've passed for a dessert with some powdered sugar, ice cream, or maybe just some chocolate drizzle.
For my main course, I played it safe and ordered my usual meal at most seafood restaurants which is fish and chips. Their fish and chips had the best flavor I've had in a long time. Their fish was flounder and it was fried southern style to perfection. I like to eat my fish with malt vinegar, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and tartar sauce and even though I ate my meal with these condiments here, they weren't even needed. I normally eat my chips first but honestly, I almost forgot I had them with how great the food was.
Salt Water Taffy
A refreshing ending to our meal.
To finish up your visit to the Salty Dog Cafe they give you freshly made salt water taffy in a peppermint flavor and it was so delicious. Now while this post focused a lot on the food at the Salty Dog Cafe, there's SO much more there to do other than just the cafe. There's a grand total of 5 other restaurants right there all together including an ice cream place that makes all of the ice cream in house. The best part is, it's all right there on the beach so if you ever find yourself in Hilton Head, South Carolina, this is definitely a place to cross off your bucket list and get some good food while soaking in the ocean air.
